Funding

Funding Boards News: As of March 10th, 2008, the Funding Board Budget has been depleted to a zero balance. We will no longer be accepting applications for this academic year. However, we look forward to receiving your applications in the Fall.

Each year the Undergraduate Student Government is pleased to provide funding for undergraduates and student-run organization. This year, the Undergraduate Student Government is proud to provide over $280,000 for students and their organizations that seek to make a difference on campus. Students and recognized student organizations can apply to receive funds from the USG Discretionary Board, the USG Leadership Fund, the USG Philanthropy Fund, the USG Professional Fund, and the USG Academic Reseach Fund.

New this year is the USG Capital Group Funding Board, which can offer loans to student organization for their fundraising events.

USG Discretionary Board

The USG Discretionary Board was established to fund programming events by recognized student organizations which do not fall under an umbrella assembly. It is the board's goal to sponsor events which are entertaining, cultural, and/or educational which cater to the entire student body. Student organizations may apply for up to $4000 per semester. In order to receive funding the student organization must be officially recognized and the proposed event must occur on campus.

Examples of 2006-2007 funded events:

  • New/North Building Governments - Mardi Gras
  • Big Game Hunters Sketch Comedy - "Shot Through the Heart"
  • SCALE - Organizing Effectively to Stop Exploitation
  • Health Business Association - Start up Funds

USG Leadership Fund

The USG Leadership Fund provides support for student organizations engaging in leadership development and recognition. Among the items funded in past years are attendance at conferences, seminars, and workshops; organization of leadership retreats; and awards for leadership.Student organizations may apply for up to $3,500 of funding in a single academic year.

Examples of 2006-2007 funded events:

  • Troy Camp - Leadership Retreat
  • Future Women CEO Speaker Series
  • LACI (Non-Profit Consulting) - Leadership Retreat
  • Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance - National Women's Leadership Conference

USG Philanthropy Fund

The USG Philanthropy Fund seeks to sponsor “hands-on” community service events which create a beneficial partnership between the University and the greater community. Additionally, it is the mission of this committee to encourage student organizations to work together to maximize philanthropic opportunities throughout the university. Student organizations are eligible to receive up to $4,350 in a given academic year for their projects.

Examples of 2006-2007 funded events:

  • Alpha Gamma Omega - "AGO Arcade," a benefit for the Invisible Children Foundation
  • URSC - Battle of the Cans
  • Lambda Theta Phi - Feed the Less Fortunate
  • Youth Exploring Passion - Mentoring Sessions (weekly for high school aged pregnant teens)

USG Professional Fund

The USG Professional Fund provides funding for events sponsored by campus organizations that give students the opportunity to meet professionals in various fields.

Examples of 2006-2007 funded events:

  • Trojan Investing Society - Asset Management Panel
  • Association of Integrated Marketing - Networking Night
  • Student Consulting Association - Consulting Expo
  • Delta Delta Sigma - "Dinner with a Dentist"

USG Academic Research Fund

The USG Academic Research Fund was establish to provide undergraduates with funding to conduct research projects, attend academic conferences and pursue other academic extracurricular activities.

Examples of 2006-2007 funded academic research projects:

  • Jennifer W. Smith, Art History - Maiolica research from the Italian Renaissance
    Used her award to travel to London to a Maiolica Conference to meet with other researchers and see the London museum examples.
  • Parth Shah, Molecular Biology - Research on the Health Sciences Campus in pre-eclampsia lab
    Used his award to buy materials (pipettes) so he could work on the HSC campus.
  • Elizabeth Cook, Theatre and History - Research on Colonial America theatres/acting
    Attended a conference in colonial Williamsburg which combined these two fields.

USG Capital Group Funding Board

The mission of the USG Capital Group is to empower student life at the University of Southern California by financing student organization efforts to raise money. Existing USG funding boards are barred from dispersing funds to fundraising events and events that charge admission. The USG Capital Group can offer loans to student organization fundraisers, provide seed money to student organization ventures in exchange for equity stakes in those ventures, and advise student organizations in pursuit of raising money. Individual student organizations are eligible for up to $1000 of capital at a tieme in the form of a loan or seed money.
