Los Angeles, CA – At the October 29th meeting of the USG Senate, the Senate deliberated SB 144-08, SB 144-15, and SB 144-16.
The Senate passed SB 144-08: A Bill to Amend the Bylaws Regarding Assembly Incorporation, which outlines the process whereby proposed assemblies may be incorporated into the Programming Department. SB 144-08 was previously rejected by the Senate, but the reassessed version of SB 144-08 passed by a vote of 10-2.
Senators Dane Sprague and Heydy Vasquez introduced SB 144-15: A Bill to Amend the Bylaws to Allow Committee Chairs to Formally Appoint Commissions Within Their Legislative Committee to the Senate for clarifying questions. Under the proposed amendment, Committee chairs can “form ad hoc commissions to deliberate, recommend, and execute a project or situation that is not properly addressed by existing committees as defined with the approval of a majority of executive-legislative officers and committee chairs.”
Chief Justice Pro Tempore Ryan Tung introduced SB 144-16: A Bill to Amend the Bylaws on the Duties of the Speakers. This bill modifies the bylaw outlining the removal process for the Speaker of the Senate and notes that, if the bill is passed in the future, the Speaker “may be removed from their position, but retain their role as Senator.”
The October 1st Senate meeting also featured reports from the Chief Diversity Officer Yasmeen ElFarra, the Chief of Staff Sofia Coen, and the Chief Communications Officer Faiz Ahmed. Senator Jeremiah Boisron, Academic Affairs Chair Emma Fallon, and External Affairs Chair Karen Borglund also provided presentations to the Senate.
