Los Angeles, CA – The External Affairs Committee of Undergraduate Student Government is pleased to announce the forthcoming installation of a mural display titled From Campus to Community at Café Dulce in the USC Village.

A USG-led community art initiative, this project aims to increase the visibility of the local South Central L.A. community on the USC campus. Since its inception in early 2024, the initiative has been spearheaded by the External Affairs Committee, a committee dedicated to bridging the gap between the USC community and local neighbors including community members, organizations, and government entities.

Amani Holbert, the artist bringing this vision to life, was introduced to the committee through LA Commons, a local organization dedicated to promoting public art. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Holbert is a passionate visual artist with deep roots in the city she calls home. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) from Loyola Marymount University.

The mural From Campus to Community will be crafted with acrylic paint on acrylic-primed cotton canvas rolls and celebrates the iconic elements and vibrant spirit of both the USC campus and its surrounding neighborhoods, honoring cultural cornerstones and historical figures. Some key elements included in the mural are:

  • Sun Motif: A recurring motif in the works of Noni Olabisi, a renowned muralist from South Central L.A., symbolizing vitality, strength, and hope.
  • Adinkra Symbols: Common in South L.A. art, these West African symbols convey values such as community, wisdom, and perseverance.
  • John Alexander Somerville: A USC alumnus and pioneering dentist who established the Dunbar Hotel, a historic landmark in the community.
  • Youth: Representing the future of both USC and South Central L.A., their presence symbolizes growth, potential, and unity.

Karen Borglund, Chair of the External Affairs Committee, shared, “I can’t be more excited that this project has finally come to life. Art is such an integral part of our community’s history, making it a powerful medium to celebrate the culture and heritage of South Central L.A. I hope that this mural will create a village environment that feels welcoming to our community members.”

The mural will be displayed from February 2nd to March 31st at Café Dulce.
