Los Angeles, CA – The Accessibility Committee of Undergraduate Student Government (USG) is pleased to announce the implementation of accessible seating in LVL 105 in Leavey Library for students with mobility needs.
The new addition of accessible seating will allow students of all abilities to have access to USC Libraries facilities at Leavey Library and is part of USG and the Accessibility Committee’s continuous efforts to improve access and inclusion for all students regardless of ability. The permanent installation of these spaces not only enhances physical accessibility but also signals a broader institutional commitment to inclusion at USC. Ensuring that students with mobility needs have equitable access to study spaces fosters a more inclusive academic environment where students of all abilities can engage in their coursework in an academic setting that meets their needs without unnecessary barriers.
There are now four tables designated as accessible tables. No reservations are needed to utilize the tables, which operate on a first-come, first-serve basis. The spaces can also be utilized by able-bodied students when not in use or needed by students with mobility needs. If a student with mobility restrictions needs the table, the able-bodied student will be expected to move for that student. Student workers and Librarians of Leavey Library will also be available to facilitate any space exchanges when requested by students.
“This initiative is especially meaningful to me, as I have worked on it consistently since my freshman year,” shared Senator Jackalyn Karamanougian. “Bringing it to fruition would not have been possible without the collaboration of Senator Julianna Melendez last year and the Accessibility Committee Chair, Izzy Del Gaudio, this year. Their support and dedication were essential in making this initiative a reality. This initiative is a meaningful step toward creating a more accessible and inclusive campus where all students, regardless of ability, have the resources they need to succeed. I hope this initiative encourages USC administrators to identify and address needed improvements in accessibility across campus, as well as pushes them to pursue university-wide policies that include the needs of students with mobility needs, ensuring their representation in future infrastructure and accessibility planning.”
