USC BONE MARROW DRIVE
November is National Morrow Awareness Month, and the National Morrow Donor Program (NMDP), a non-profit organization dedicated to making transplants possible for every racial and ethnic community, is organizing the Bone Marrow Drive with USG and Sigma Nu.
On any given day, 6,000 men, women, and children with diseases such as leukemia or lymphoma are searching the National Marrow Donor Registry for a life-saving donor. Since tissue types are inherited, race, ethnicity, and ancestry haveeverything to do with finding the right match. Patients who are African-American, American-Indian, Asian, and Native Hawaiian have an especially difficult time in finding a tissue match, since these groups are underrepresented in the registry.
The purpose of this event is to increase participation in the NMDP as well as to get the word out to the community: Bone Marrow had everything to do with race.
